Typhoon Bavi hits China

China has been hit by two powerful typhoons in a week. The latest was on Saturday evening (July 11) in the coastal city of Taizhou and the second time in the middle of the night in Wenzhou. About two million people have been evacuated from the affected areas. The British media outlet BBC reported this information on Sunday (July 12).
According to the information received, Typhoon Bavi covers an area of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), which is almost the width of France. After hitting several remote islands in Japan, Typhoon Bavi passed near the northern tip of Taiwan. Earlier, at least 17 people were killed in landslides caused by the storm in the Philippines.
Typhoon Bavi has now weakened to a severe tropical storm. However, the typhoon still poses a risk due to the large amount of moisture in the rainy region. Authorities said the storm could bring unusually heavy rain to eastern Zhejiang province and northeastern Fujian province on Sunday. State media reported that more than 1.7 million people had been evacuated from Zhejiang and thousands more from neighboring provinces. Schools and offices in Zhejiang were closed, and 400 flights and dozens of train services were canceled. Authorities are evacuating hundreds of thousands of residents from Wenzhou, a city of about 10 million people, over fears of an outbreak. Beijing has ordered the evacuation of 100,000 people to avoid the risk, officials said.
