Current Speaker mourns death of former Speaker
Current Speaker of the Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has expressed his condolences on the death of former Speaker of the National Parliament Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar. This information was given in a condolence message sent by the National Parliament Secretariat today, Sunday (July 12).
The Parliament Secretariat said that Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar was born on December 1, 1931 in Nayabari village of Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh district and died on July 12, 2026 in a hospital in the capital (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 94 years old at the time of his death. In a condolence message, Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed prayed for the forgiveness of the soul of the late Bir Bikram and expressed deep condolences and sorrow to his bereaved family.
He obtained MA and LLB degrees from Dhaka University. Later, in 1961, he went to the UK for higher education and obtained a ‘Barrister-at-Law’ degree from Lincoln’s Inn, London. After returning home, he joined the legal profession and established himself as a renowned expert in constitutional, civil and criminal law in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar served as the Speaker of the Eighth National Parliament from 28 October 2001 to 25 January 2009. It is worth noting that he held various important positions in the cabinet of the late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. At various times, he served as the Minister of State for Public Works and Urban Development, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister of State for Land, Minister of Education and Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
