Two people, including a woman, died in lightning
Local residents who had taken shelter in a tea shop to escape the rain in Pirganj, Thakurgaon, were suddenly struck by lightning. Two people, including a woman and a shopkeeper, died on the spot. Two others were seriously injured in the incident. The accident occurred on Sunday (August 2) afternoon in Kushrigaon Bolgaon area of Bhomradah union of the upazila.
The deceased are – Shashti Rani (50), wife of Mohen Chandra alias Tihaku of Kushrigaon Bolgaon area of the upazila, and Suhi Ram Roy (50), son of the deceased Behru Roy of the same area. Suhi Ram was a tea shopkeeper by profession. The injured are Tepra and Shalan Chandra of the same area.
According to local and eyewitness sources, the sky suddenly became cloudy in the afternoon and heavy rain and gusty winds started. At that time, some local residents gathered at a nearby tea shop to escape the rain and have tea. While drinking tea and chatting, a loud thunderclap suddenly struck the shop. Two people died on the spot and two others were seriously injured due to the severe lightning strike.
Immediately after the incident, locals rushed to rescue the injured and quickly took them to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex. The doctor on duty at the hospital’s emergency department declared two of them dead. Since the condition of the other two was critical, they were referred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital after primary treatment.
Confirming the incident, Pirganj Police Station OC Iqbal Hossain Pramanik said that the accident occurred suddenly while they were in the tea shop in the rain. Police went to the spot after receiving information that two people had died and two were injured in the lightning strike.
