Road Minister assures speedy development of Comilla-Brahmanbaria Highway
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said that alleviating the suffering of the people is the priority of the current government. In continuation of this, I hope that there will be visible progress in the development of the Comilla-Brahmanbaria Highway very soon. He gave this assurance in response to the urgent public interest notice of Comilla-4 NCP member Md. Abul Hasnat in Parliament today, Wednesday (April 29). The minister said that the long-standing suffering of the people of this region will be alleviated soon by implementing the ongoing renovation and widening work quickly.
He said that although the large project to upgrade the highway to four lanes is currently outside the scope of foreign financing, the government is looking for alternative financing. At the same time, the renovation and development work of the affected sections is being taken forward on an urgent basis so that the communication system can be improved quickly. Rabiul Alam said that about 28 kilometers of the important section from Brahmanbaria to Sarail of the 82.68-kilometer-long highway has already been upgraded to four lanes. Separate lanes are being kept for slow-moving vehicles here, which will increase road safety.
He also said that a total of 804 meters of rigid pavement construction is underway in the most affected areas of Debidwar, Kangshanagar and Bhinglabari. In addition, under the periodic maintenance program, initiatives have been taken to widen and make 1,845 meters of roads more durable and strong at various places including Mainamati, Phulagachtala, Companyganj, Katherpool and Kutichowmuhni, the tender for which is under evaluation process.
He also said that tenders have already been invited to quickly start the work of widening about 20 kilometers of the road from Comilla to Debidwar to 34 feet. The minister said that a consulting firm has been appointed to implement the project and the final design of the highway is being prepared. He expressed hope that if these initiatives are implemented quickly, road communication between Chittagong and Sylhet divisions will be safer, more comfortable and more dynamic.
