Police forced to release drug dealer in Lalmonirhat
While arresting a person involved in drug dealing in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat, the police were attacked by a section of the local crowd. At one point, seeing the situation getting heated, the blocked police members were forced to release the detained person. The incident took place on Saturday (July 18) afternoon in the Bhabanipur area of Tongbhanga Union of the upazila.
Locals said that a team of Hatibandha police including Sub-Inspectors (SI) Rimon and Tuhin and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Lutfar Hakim of Hatibandha Police Station arrested Hamidul Islam (37), son of deceased Jasim Uddin of Bhabanipur area and a drug dealer. The arrested Hamidul has a previous drug case against him.
After the arrest, when Hamidul was being brought, his family members and some locals gathered and attacked the police and created obstacles. Upon receiving the information, additional forces from the police station left for the scene, but the situation deteriorated before then. At one point, the police were forced to release Hamidul after facing gunfire. When asked about this, Hatibandha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ramjan Ali said that Hamidul, who was arrested by the police, had a drug case against him earlier. The police faced obstacles while trying to arrest him. Legal action is being taken against those who incited the crowd.
