Khamenei’s funeral begins, crowds gather in Tehran
The funeral and six-day official farewell ceremony for Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has begun. The ceremony officially began on Saturday morning (July 4), state television reported. A final farewell procession will also be held in Iraq. He will then be buried.
Thousands of mourners gathered before Khamenei’s body reached the Grand Mosalla complex in Tehran. They carried red flags, known as a symbol of revenge. At that time, they chanted slogans such as “Down with America” and “Revenge, revenge.”
According to the French news agency AFP, thousands of people entered the Grand Mosalla complex in Tehran before the funeral ceremony began. The main square of the huge complex was filled with mourners. Strict traffic control measures were taken across the capital for the occasion.
An AFP correspondent said many people had walked several kilometres to the venue. Videos circulating on social media showed people waiting in long lines at various metro stations in Tehran to attend the funeral and burial.
