Israel ‘obliged’ to honour any potential deal with Iran: Trump
US President Donald Trump has said that Israel is ‘obliged’ to honour any potential deal with Iran. He claims that he has full control over the decision-making process. In a telephone interview with the Financial Times on Sunday (June 7), Trump said, ‘I make all the decisions. Netanyahu doesn’t make any decisions.’
The interview comes as tensions between Iran and Israel have again escalated with a fresh missile attack. Iran has reportedly fired missiles at Israel for the first time amid a fragile ceasefire between the US and Israel. At the same time, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have threatened to attack Israeli ships in the Red Sea, raising fresh concerns about global trade.
Earlier this week, tensions between Israel and Iran escalated when Israel entered Lebanon’s buffer zone and targeted the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, despite Israel having previously agreed to a US-backed ceasefire. According to US media outlet Axios, Trump urged Netanyahu not to retaliate against Iran. However, the Israeli Defense Forces later announced that they had retaliated by striking military targets in western and central Iran.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, Trump called on the two countries to “immediately” cease hostilities via the social media platform ‘Truth Social’. Later, in a post, he said that Israel and Iran were moving towards an “immediate ceasefire”. Trump also commented that final peace talks were “ongoing”, but ignorance or incompetence could be an obstacle. He said that the blockade would remain in place to control the situation until a final agreement is reached.
Meanwhile, Iran said on Monday that it had temporarily suspended military operations against Israel, but warned that it would respond “more strongly and devastatingly” if Israel “carries out another aggression” in southern Lebanon.
