Love with an upper caste girl, youth beaten to death in Uttarakhand
In India’s Tehri Garhwal district, an 18-year-old Dalit youth was allegedly beaten to death for befriending an upper caste minor. One of his friends was seriously injured in the incident. Police confirmed this information to the media on Monday (June 8).
The deceased youth has been identified as Ketan Lal (18). He was a resident of the local Dewal village. His friend Dibakar Dimri, who was seriously injured in the attack, has been admitted to the district hospital in Bauradir. According to a complaint filed by Ketan’s father Dhanpal Lal to the police, the attack took place on Sunday night in Kholgarh village of Pratapnagar block.
Quoting police and local sources, NDTV reported that Ketan had been friends with a minor from Kholgarh village for six months. Last Sunday night, around 11 pm, the girl called Ketan on his mobile phone and asked him to come to her village. Ketan had gone to Kholgarh with his friend Dibakar Dimri. Police said that as soon as the two friends reached the village, the girl’s family members locked them in a room and beat them with sticks.
The next morning, the girl’s father called Dhanpal Lal yesterday to inform him of his son’s critical condition and asked him to take him away. Dhanpal Lal quickly went to the spot and rescued his son in a bloody state. He was then taken to the Chound Lamgaon Community Health Centre, where the doctor on duty declared Ketan dead.
As soon as the news of the brutal murder spread, there was intense anger in the local area. The family of the deceased and angry local residents started a protest in front of the hospital demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits. They initially refused to accept the body until they got the expected assurance from the administration.
Tehri Garhwal Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shweta Chaubey confirmed the incident and said that a murder case has been registered in the incident. Simultaneously, a case has also been registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. The SSP further said that the police have already detained an accused named Yasbir Singh Panwar for questioning on suspicion of involvement in the incident and the investigation into the incident is underway.
