BNP leader’s motorcycle stolen, Awami League leader arrested

Police have arrested a man named Md. Abdus Salam (50) on charges of embezzling money from a BNP leader in the name of recovering a stolen motorcycle in Baliadangi, Thakurgaon. The Thakurgaon Judicial Court sent him to jail on Wednesday (June 10).
Abdus Salam is the son of Md. Ishar Uddin, former chairman of Dwait Union No. 5 of Baliadangi Upazila, and Md. Ishar Uddin of Mahishmari village. He is known to be involved in local Awami League politics.
According to the police and the victim’s statement, a 150 cc motorcycle worth Tk 1.45 lakh was stolen from the balcony of the house of Md. Farhad Ali, a resident of Mahishmari village and local BNP leader, on Monday night. The next morning, after receiving news of the theft, Farhad Ali came to know locally that former UP chairman Abdus Salam could recover the stolen motorcycle in exchange for money.
BNP leader Farhad Ali said that based on this information, he immediately went to Awami League leader Abdus Salam. Salam claimed to know where the motorcycle was and spoke to an unknown person and deleted the number from Farhad Ali’s mobile phone. After that, he first demanded Tk 2,000, promising to return the motorcycle.
The statement further said that on Tuesday afternoon, Abdus Salam took the victim to the Thakurgaon Sadar Adalat area, promising to bring the motorcycle. There, he collected another Tk 30,000 on the pretext of delivering the motorcycle. Immediately after taking the money, Abdus Salam cleverly fled the scene, leaving Farhad Ali sitting, and switched off his mobile phone.
Later that night, at around 11:30 pm, when Abdus Salam reached the Baliadangi intersection, the victim and local people surrounded him. Then he demanded another Tk 20,000 to return the motorcycle and threatened him if he did not pay. Later, the agitated crowd detained him and informed the Baliadangi police station. Police arrested him from the spot. Baliadangi Police Station OC Md. Bulbul Islam confirmed the incident and said that Md. Farhad Ali has filed a written complaint with the police station as the plaintiff in this incident. A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant section and sent to the court.
