Special cabinet meeting underway to approve proposed budget

A special cabinet meeting is underway to approve the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The meeting began at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Thursday (June 11) morning. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is presiding over it. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will present the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the Jatiya Sangsad in the afternoon.
The proposed budget for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year has been set at 9.38 trillion taka. Against this, the revenue revenue target has been set at 6.95 trillion taka. As a result, the gap between income and expenditure has stood at 2.43 trillion taka. To meet this huge budget deficit, the government has planned to raise funds from both domestic and foreign sources.
According to the proposed budget, 1.16 trillion taka will be collected from foreign loans and grants and 1.27 trillion taka from domestic sources. Of this, 1.12 trillion taka will be collected from the banking system and 15 trillion taka from savings certificates and other sources.
The budget proposal will be presented under the chairmanship of Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and in the presence of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. This is the 55th budget of the country. In addition, this is the first budget presentation by Amir Khasru as Finance Minister during the current government’s term. As per the rules, the budget will be approved by the cabinet before being presented to the parliament and then President Md. Shahabuddin will sign it as assenting. This new fiscal year will officially come into effect from July 1.
