Alvi gets bail in wife’s suicide case, no obstacle to release

Actor Zaher Alvi alias Md. Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan has been granted bail in the case of abetting the suicide of his wife Afra Evanat Iqra. A High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher gave this order on Sunday (August 2). As a result, there is no obstacle to his release from prison. Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin heard Alvi’s bail application in the court.
Earlier, on June 18, the actor surrendered through a lawyer in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin. After the hearing, the court rejected his bail application and ordered him to be sent to prison. Later, on June 21, the investigating officer of the case applied for his seven-day remand for the sake of a fair investigation of the case. On June 24, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir granted him a two-day remand after the hearing. The court ordered Alvi to be sent to jail after the remand on June 30.
On February 28, the police recovered Iqra’s hanging body from a house in the capital’s Mirpur DOHS area. At that time, her husband Zaher Alvi was in Nepal. Informing about his wife’s death, the actor wrote, “My wife Iqra committed suicide at her house in Mirpur DOHS this afternoon. I was shooting in Nepal. I have not been able to speak since hearing the news. I do not understand why she left like this without thinking about our children and me.”
On March 1, Iqra’s father filed a case in this incident, making Alvi the main accused. He accused Iqra of abetting suicide. Alvi’s mother and alleged lover Tithi have also been accused in the case. It is worth noting that actor Alvi and Iqra got married on November 9, 2010 out of love. After keeping their marriage secret for 14 years, it became public in 2024. They have a son.
