Two killed in separate lightning strikes in Jamalpur

Two people were killed in separate lightning strikes in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur, Md. Shamim Mia (37) and Sagar Islam (18). These two tragic incidents took place in Gaibandha and Sapadhari unions of the upazila on Wednesday (April 29) morning. The deceased Shamim Mia is the son of Mohammad Ali, a member of Marakandi Uttar Bari village of Gaibandha union. The other deceased Sagar Islam is the son of Md. Swadhin of Chiniyapara area of ​​Dewanganj upazila.
According to local sources, Shamim Mia had gone to fish in the river around 6 am yesterday. At that time, lightning suddenly started with rain and he was seriously injured by lightning and died on the spot. On the other hand, Sagar Islam was killed by lightning while constructing a paved road under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Indullamari area of ​​ward number 8 of Sapadhari union number 4 of the upazila around 9 am. There were 10 to 12 workers working there at once.
When it started raining, the workers stopped work and went to a safe place. While others moved forward, Sagar Islam fell behind a little. Just then, he was seriously injured by lightning and died on the spot. His colleagues tried to save him quickly, but it was not possible to save him.
At around 12 noon, Sapdhari Union Parishad Chairman Md. Shah Alam Mandal confirmed the matter and said that he was struck by lightning while moving away from road work during the rain. A worker named Sagar Islam from Dewanganj was killed in the incident. Islampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Abdul Qayyum Gazi said that the police have received information about the death of two people in the lightning strike. Necessary measures are being taken.
