The country’s stability will be better if elections are held: Army Chief

The Army Chief said, the country’s stability will be better if elections are held. Lieutenant General Md. Mainur Rahman, General Officer Commanding, Army Headquarters Training and Doctrine Command (GOC ArtDoc), said this at a press conference held at the Army Headquarters today, Wednesday (November 5).
He said, “Like the people of the country, the army also wants a free, fair and impartial election to be held as per the government’s outline. A time frame has also been given in that outline. We hope that the country’s stability will be better if elections are held, the law and order situation will gradually normalize and the army will be able to return to the cantonment by then. We are expecting that.”
Mainur Rahman said, “The army is making proper preparations based on the outline that the government has prepared for the elections so far. Our training activities, which are currently underway on a limited scale, are shedding light on what we have to do during the elections.”
The army officer said, “The army has been out for the last 15 months. If we have to stay out until the elections or a little after that, then we will have to stay out for a few more days. This is disrupting our training. Also, the situation the army has faced for the last 15 months; it was not an easy situation. Bangladesh does not face such a situation every day. So, we also want a fair election to be held and we can return to the cantonment.” He said, “For the last 15 months, the army has been engaged in support of the civilian administration and has been performing its duties even in very challenging and adverse conditions. The army has performed its duties with great professionalism during these 15 months.”
