Pirates hijack oil tanker off Yemen coast
Pirates have hijacked an oil tanker off the coast of Yemen. The BBC, citing multiple Somali security officials, claimed that the hijackers were Somali pirates. The Yemeni coast guard said the ship, named ‘MT Eureka’, was being taken to Somalia via the Gulf of Aden after being hijacked.
This is the second oil tanker hijacking in the area in the past 10 days. Earlier, another ship named ‘Honor 25’ was captured by pirates on April 22. The ship was said to be carrying 18,500 barrels of oil.
Security officials said the Togolese-flagged ship ‘MT Eureka’ was captured by armed pirates at around 5am local time. The ship is currently in the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Somalia, and is expected to anchor in Somali waters soon.
