Missing while fishing in the sea, old Syed Ahmed returns home after 54 years
Syed Ahmed, a fisherman from Hatia upazila of Noakhali, went fishing in the sea 54 years ago. He was 29 years old at the time. But he went missing in a trawler sinking in the sea. Syed Ahmed, who was believed to be dead for a long time, has returned to his family at the age of 83. This has created a huge sensation in the area. The incident took place last Tuesday (May 5) at Fazli’s house in Panchbigha village of Ward No. 5 of Hatia Municipality.
According to family and local sources, Syed Ahmed went missing in a trawler sinking while fishing off the coast of Kutubdia about five decades ago. After not finding any trace of him for a long time, the family assumed that he was no longer alive. Later, his relatives returned to normal life. The family claims that after the accident, he somehow crossed the border and went to India. He spent a long time in various areas and religious institutions there. Recently, he was rescued by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) after being kidnapped in the Howrah police station area of India. Later, after completing the necessary legal procedures, he was sent to Bangladesh.
Syed Ahmed returned to his home in Hatia on Tuesday (May 5) afternoon. At first, many were surprised when he came home and introduced himself. Later, relatives and local elders recognized him. When the news spread, people in the area gathered at the house to catch a glimpse of him. However, this incident of returning after a long time has created new complications in the family. Last Friday (May 8), the old man’s son Md. Akram (53), who returned to this incident, filed a general diary (GD) at Hatia police station.
He alleged that some people are trying to take his father into their custody. Besides, various discussions have started regarding family property and money. Many local residents commented that the incident is unbelievable and emotional. It seems like a movie story that a missing person will return alive after 54 years. However, after returning home, there has been a family tension surrounding him. Hatia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kabir Hossain said that the old man’s son Akram said that his father returned and went to live with his cousins. Later, he asked him to stay with him for social reasons. However, his cousins are not allowing him to stay with them. He reported the matter to the police in writing.
