Husband sentenced to life imprisonment for beating wife to death with hammer
A court in Faridpur has sentenced a man named Lalon Mallya (54) to life imprisonment for beating his wife to death with a hammer over dowry demand. He has also been fined Tk 20,000 and sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment in default.
Today, Monday (July 13), at 2 pm, Faridpur Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal Judge (District and Sessions Judge) Shamima Parveen announced the verdict. The accused is the son of Abul Hossain Mallya of Kamarkhali village in Madhukhali upazila of the district. After the verdict was announced, he was sent to jail under police guard.
Confirming the verdict, Faridpur Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan Ratan said that the court gave this verdict as the evidence in this case was proven beyond doubt. The sentence of this verdict will be calculated from the previous imprisonment.
According to the court, about 16 years ago, accused Lalon Molya married a woman named Sajeda Begum (40) in a family tradition. Later, both the husband and wife started living in a house in Alipur area of Faridpur city and Lalon Molya worked as a security guard in that house.
Since marriage, Lalon Molya had been torturing his wife Sajeda Begum at various times for dowry. At one point, Sajeda Begum was hit in the face with a hammer and beaten to death in the early hours of August 23, 2022, for not paying the demanded Tk 50,000. On receiving the information, the police of Kotwali police station went to the spot and recovered the body in a bloody state and the locals handed over the accused to the police. In this incident, the sister of the deceased, Sajeda Begum, filed a murder case with the Kotwali police station on August 26.
The sole accused in the case was arrested and the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Jagannath Das, filed a chargesheet in the court on January 11, 2024. In the chargesheet, he gave a chilling account of the murder. It was mentioned that on the morning of the incident, after not receiving the dowry money, he injured his wife Sajeda Begum by hitting her on her left cheek, left eyebrow, left eye, nose, forehead, right shoulder and various parts of her face and body with a hammer. Later, he called the owner of the house and said, “She is in danger.” Then the manager of the house rushed to the spot and found Sajeda Begum lying in a bloody state. Later, after receiving a call on 999, the body was recovered and the police and the accused were arrested.
