Child dies of measles symptoms in Noakhali
A 7-year-old child named Md. Samit has died of measles symptoms at the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. This is the first death due to measles symptoms in the district. In addition, 19 more patients have been newly admitted with measles symptoms in the last 24 hours. The child died at around 4:15 am today (May 24) while undergoing treatment at the children’s ward of Noakhali General Hospital.
General Hospital Superintendent Dr. Farid Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the matter. Samit is the son of Mofizul Haque of Katakhali village in Subarnachar upazila of the district. Doctors said that Samit was admitted to the children’s ward on Saturday afternoon with measles symptoms. He died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment.
According to hospital sources, a total of 915 children in the district have received treatment for measles and measles symptoms since the beginning of April. None of them died. However, some have been transferred to Dhaka and Chittagong for better treatment. Currently, 120 children are being treated in the isolation ward of the hospital. An average of 20 children are being admitted with measles symptoms every day. However, there is a severe shortage of beds and medicines. As a result, parents have to buy most of the medicines from outside the hospital. In addition, medical services are being disrupted due to the shortage of doctors, nurses and staff.
