9-year-old child raped and murdered in Nagarkanda

The police have recovered the body of a 9-year-old child from the side of the railway line in Charjashordi union of Nagarkanda upazila of Faridpur. The family alleges that the child was raped and murdered. However, the police said that an investigation is underway to uncover the real cause of the incident.
The body of child Mahmuda Akhter (9) was recovered from the family graveyard next to the railway line in Tarakandi village of the same union at around 9 pm on Saturday (August 1). She is the daughter of Idris Mollah of that village. She was the youngest of four siblings.
According to family and local sources, Mahmuda went missing around 5 pm yesterday. Family members searched in various places but could not find her. Later, after receiving information from locals, the police went to the spot and conducted a search. At one point, the child’s body was recovered from the family graveyard next to the railway line.
Shahnaz Begum, the sister-in-law of the deceased, alleged that the child was not wearing any clothes when the body was recovered. The clothes she was wearing were also not found. The family suspects that she was raped and killed. However, no confirmed statement has been received from the police regarding this allegation yet.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Nagarkanda Circle Mohammad Al Fahad said that initially the incident is being considered as a murder. Two people have been detained for questioning in this incident. Initially, it is learnt that she may have died after getting injured while playing with another child. However, a serious investigation is being carried out to find out if there is any other reason behind this.
He also said that the body has been sent to the morgue of Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Preparations are underway to file a case on behalf of the family in this incident. Necessary legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
