17 Awami League leaders and activists arrested in Narayanganj

Police have arrested 17 people in Narayanganj in 24 hours on charges of being associated with the banned Awami League. Security has been tightened at important places in the district on the occasion of the organization’s founding anniversary. Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehedi of the district police confirmed this information on Tuesday (June 23) afternoon.
He said that 17 leaders and activists were arrested from seven police stations in the district between 12 noon on Monday and 12 noon on Tuesday. He said that the video footage and still images of the recently banned organization’s Jhatika procession were analyzed and those involved were identified with the help of information technology. They were later arrested in a drive.
Checkposts have been set up at at least 10 important places, including the entrances to Narayanganj, to prevent sabotage and unpleasant incidents in the district. Meanwhile, police have intensified search operations in various places including in front of the regional passport office in the city’s signboard area, Shimrail intersection in Siddhirganj, Fatullah, Syedpur, Sonargaon and Kanchpur. Along with this, members of the BGB and army were also seen patrolling. Meanwhile, no members of the organization were seen in front of the Awami League office located in the city’s Railgate No. 2 area since Tuesday morning.
