Siblings drown in water

A sibling died in water drowning in Phulbari, Dinajpur. The incident occurred on Wednesday (May 20) at around 8:30 am in the Khairbari Bazar area of the upazila. The two children are Shahin Alam’s daughter Sabiha (4) and son Siam (3).
According to local sources, the two children fell into a deep hole like a pond that was created due to sand extraction near their house in the morning. After not seeing them for a long time, family members started searching for them. Later, they were rescued from the hole and taken to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Doctor Dr. Alif Noor Alam Sayedi said that it was initially confirmed that the two children were dead before being brought to the hospital. Later, the matter was reported to the police station. Kobad Hossain Sarkar, headmaster of Khairbari Government Primary School, said that a deep hole was created due to illegal sand extraction from the field next to the house, due to which water always accumulates there.
Locals believe that Siam fell into the hole first and his elder sister Sabiha also drowned while trying to save him. Repeated attempts were made to contact the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Commissioner (Land) on mobile phones, but they could not be reached for comment. Shapla Begum, sub-inspector of Phulbari Police Station, said that legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.
