Legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle passed away. She breathed her last at a private hospital in Mumbai today (April 12). She was 92 years old at the time of her death. She was admitted to the hospital yesterday Saturday due to heart and respiratory problems.
The artist had been suffering from age-related ailments for the past few months. When her condition deteriorated last night, she was shifted to the ICU of the hospital. This afternoon, her son Anand Bhosle confirmed the news of the death of this renowned artist. Her last rites will be performed tomorrow, Monday.
One of the most successful and popular singers in the history of Indian cinema, Asha Bhosle was born in 1933 into the music-loving Mangeshkar family. She started singing professionally at the age of just 9. After recording her first song in a film in 1943, she established herself in Bollywood in the 1950s. Despite not being in the shadow of her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar, she captivated the audience with her singing style for decades.
This renowned singer has been awarded several awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke and the Banga Bibhushan. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. Her personal life was quite dramatic. At the age of just 16, she married her personal secretary, 31-year-old Ganapatrao Bhosle, against her family’s wishes. However, she left the relationship in 1960.
Later, in 1980, she married the famous music director Rahul Dev Burman (RD Burman). Despite the strong objections of the Burman family, their long-standing love blossomed into a marriage. They remained together until RD Burman’s death in 1994. In the last years of her life, her granddaughter Jenai Bhosle was the shadow companion of this musical empress. Her death brought an end to a golden era of Indian music.
