Putin’s Adviser Gives Good News on Ukraine War
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s adviser Kirill Dmitriev said that Moscow, Washington and Kiev are “very close” to a diplomatic agreement to end the Ukraine war. He made the comments in an interview with CNN after arriving in Washington for meetings with US officials.
“The meeting between President Putin and US President Donald Trump has not been canceled. It will take place later,” Dmitriev said. “The meeting between the two leaders will probably take place at a later date,” he said. He added that talks were continuing despite new US sanctions on Russia’s energy sector.
According to European diplomats, as quoted by Reuters, EU countries are preparing a new ceasefire proposal that is consistent with the previous framework and would keep the United States as the main mediator. “It’s a big step for Zelensky that he’s now acknowledging the reality of the border,” Dmitriev said, adding that it could help build bridges between the warring parties.
Dmitriev’s visit to the United States comes as Washington imposes new sanctions on two major Russian oil companies. But the Kremlin’s special envoy insisted that “the dialogue between Russia and the United States will continue.”
He also warned that “the US sanctions could have the opposite effect, as they could increase the price of gasoline in the United States.” According to a report by Axios, Dmitriev will meet with President Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Miami on Saturday. Meanwhile, Russian news agency TASS reported that he will also attend several other unspecified meetings.
