‘Generation G’ protests now in Peru
Hundreds of anti-government protesters clashed with police in Lima, the Peruvian capital. Police fired tear gas at protesters on Saturday (September 20), while protesters hurled rocks and sticks at them.
The demonstration was organized by a youth organization called ‘Generation G’ to protest against growing social unrest in Peru over organized crime, corruption in government offices and a recent pension reform. About 500 people gathered in the city center, with police in attendance.
One protester, named Gladys, said that democracy in the country is not what it used to be. The situation is getting worse due to terrorism and extortion. Another protester, Celine Amasifuen, said, “Congress has no credibility, not even the approval of the people. They are bringing disaster to this country.”
The clashes broke out as people tried to reach the executive and congress buildings in Lima. Radio station Excitosa reported that their reporter and a cameraman were shot in the clashes.
Police said at least three officers were injured in the clashes. President Dina Boluaret’s support has waned due to rising extortion and organized crime, as her term ends next year.
