    Manna dey will live forever with us in his song

    Today is the day that Manna Day (the legendary vocalist of the subcontinent) passes away. On October 24, 2013, this famous artist left the country of no return. Manna dey will live forever in song, in melody. He is the emperor of music and the king of melody. Various aspects of people’s lives have been revealed in his songs. Manna’s list of timeless songs is so long that one cannot finish listening to it. He has sung about 4000 songs in his long musical life.

    Prabodh Chandra Dey was born on May 1, 1919 in Calcutta. To all who is known as Manna Dey. Mother’s name is Mahamaya and father’s name is Poorna Chandra Dey. His musical inspiration was his uncle musician Krishna Chandra Dey.

    At the age of 23, Manna De made her debut in Bollywood cinema in 1942, holding the hand of Kaka Krishna Chandra De. He sang a duet for the first time in the movie ‘Tamanna’ directed by Kakar Sangeet. The first opportunity came as a solo singer in the movie ‘Ramrajya’. In 1943, he sang the song ‘Gai Tu To Gayi Sita Sati’ in that movie. Manna De teamed up with Sachin Dev Varman in the 1950 movie ‘Mashal’.

    Manna Dey became popular all over India after the release of the movie ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ in 1953. Salil Chowdhury’s melody and music made him popular in this movie song.

    Manna De married Sulochana Kumaran in 1953. Their two daughters are Suroma and Sumita. The first song with famous vocalist Lata Mangeshkar is called ‘Lopat Ke Pot Pahane Bikral’ and the first song with Asha Bhosle is ‘O Raat Gayi Phir Din Aya’. Manna Dey won the National Film Award for the first time in 1969 for the song in the movie ‘Mere Huzur’.

    He has not sung in any Hindi film since 1992. However, he has sung in Bengali movies. He has sung in Hindi, Bengali, Maithili, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam languages.

    In 2005, Manna Dey’s autobiography ‘Jeevaner Jalsaghare’ was published in book form. A documentary about him was released in 2008. Which was shot in a coffee house in Kolkata.

    Manna De Sangeet has been awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke and National Film Awards.
