Two schoolgirls drown in Kurigram

Two second-grade students drowned in a sewer in Phulbari, Kurigram. Their bodies were recovered from a sewer between Barabhitta and Bhangamor unions of the upazila at around 8 pm on Sunday (July 5).
The deceased have been identified as Lushi Khatun (9), daughter of Nur Hossain of Rabaitari village in Bhangamor union, and Arshi (8), daughter of Anisur Rahman of Naodabas village in Barabhitta union. Both of them were second-grade students of Rabaitari Government Primary School.
Family and locals said that Lushi and Arshi had gone out to play together in the afternoon after returning home from school yesterday. When they did not return home even after evening, family members started searching for them in different places. Then around 8 pm, locals saw the bodies of the two children floating in a sewer near the house. They were later rescued from there.
It is initially believed that they died after accidentally falling into the sewer while playing. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Phulbari Police Station Mahmud Hasan Naim said that the police are on their way to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
