Residents of the capital are facing gas shortage.

For a long time, there has been a gas supply crisis in the factories and homes of the capital Dhaka and surrounding districts. However, the gas crisis has intensified especially in homes during the last three days due to the severe winter. People are unable to cook due to lack of gas at home. Even many hotels and restaurants are facing difficulties in collecting cooked food due to lack of gas.

While this crisis is going on in the residential pipeline gas, dealers have also increased the price of gas cylinders. As a result, people’s suffering due to the gas shortage has reached its peak. In this situation, responsible officials of Titas say that the gas supply will be somewhat normal by Sunday. However, it will not be possible to supply gas to the satisfaction of industries and residents right now.

Those concerned said that since there is not enough gas from domestic sources as per the demand, efforts are being made to meet the demand by importing liquefied natural gas (LNG). Gas imported from abroad is supplied to the national grid through two floating terminals in Maheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar. However, the government is able to supply half of the country’s gas needs through the supply of gas produced from domestic gas fields and imported gas. As a result, the country has been in a gas crisis for a long time. Amid such a crisis, the capital and surrounding districts have been facing a severe gas crisis for the last three days due to the renovation of the LNG terminal.

It is learned that the LNG terminal operated by Accelerate Energy went under repair for 72 hours for repair and maintenance work. As a result, LNG supply from the terminal was stopped. The terminal was repaired for three consecutive days since last Wednesday. This has exacerbated the gas crisis across the country in the last few days. Usually, the daily gas demand in the country is four thousand million cubic feet. Out of this, the situation is handled by supplying a maximum of 2,700 million cubic feet.

Golap Saharin, a housewife from the capital’s Mohammadpur area, told our time, “I moved to this house on Salimullah Road at the beginning of this month, leaving my old area. When I arrived, I saw that there was no gas in the kitchen stove. She said, “I have two small children. They have to prepare and cook their food.”

Sabiha Mumtaz, a school teacher from Shekhertek area of Mohammadpur, told our time, “I have to finish cooking for the children in the morning and go to school. There has been no gas at all for a few days. As a result, I am in extreme crisis. Even collecting food from hotels is a problem.” She said, “We have to wait until late at night for gas to arrive and cook. Overall, I am in a difficult situation.” She said, “We have been in a gas crisis for years. However, the situation has suddenly worsened in the last few days.”

Meanwhile, not only Mohammadpur, but several customers from different areas of the capital have complained that they often have problems with Titas gas supply. Residents of Banasree, Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Basabo, Old Dhaka, Moghbazar and Azimpur are suffering the most. Customers say that irregularities prevail in all areas. Even if customers do not get gas properly, they have to pay the bill at the end of the month. On the other hand, safe transportation and use of bottled cylinders have not yet been established. Various accidents often occur. As a result, people have to live a life of fear due to the availability and crisis of fuel.

Meanwhile, the managing director (MD) of the distribution company ‘Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company’, Shahnewaz Parvez, told our time that the gas crisis that has arisen over the past few days is mainly due to the shutdown of LNG supply. He said that due to the repair of one of the two LNG terminals, the supply of gas has decreased by 370 million cubic feet per day. He said, however, the latest news is that the repair work of the terminal has been completed. Gas supply has started. Gas supply will increase slightly from tomorrow (today, Sunday).

When asked when the gas supply as per the expectations of the customers will be provided, the MD of Titas said that to ensure the supply of gas as per the expectations of the customers under Titas, Titas will have to supply 2100 million cubic feet of gas. In practice, that does not match. Titas gets a maximum of 1400 million to 1500 million. In the last three days, it has come down to 1200 to 1300 million. As a result, the crisis cannot be resolved. He said that the crisis cannot be resolved unless the gas supply from Petrobangla can be increased.
