Pakistan threatens war against India

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has directly threatened war against India. New Delhi has said that it will stick to its decision to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. This has angered Islamabad. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Khawaja Asif said that Islamabad may take military action against India if its water security is threatened.
In an interview given to ARY News on Saturday (June 20), the Pakistani Defense Minister said, “Whenever we feel that our national security (of which water is a part) is threatened, we will fight against India.”
The comments from the top echelons of Pakistan come at a time when India is sticking to its decision to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. India says the decision was taken after an attack in April 2025. Delhi says the treaty will remain suspended until effective action is taken against Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorist activities. Khawaja Asif has alleged that India is “using water as a weapon” and controlling the flow of rivers. This has affected about one-third of the country’s population, with the situation particularly bad in Sindh and Balochistan.
According to official data, various canals of the Indus are facing severe water shortages. The North-West Canal is facing a water shortage of 64.1 percent, the Rice Canal is facing a water shortage of 38 percent, and the Dadu Canal is facing a water shortage of 82 percent. Local administration and leaders have expressed fears that the economic crisis will deepen as the water level in the Sukkur Barrage drops.
