Japan earthquake death toll rises to 28, rescue operations continue

The death toll from the 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Japan has risen to 28. The country’s government spokesman confirmed this information. However, rescue operations are still underway in several affected areas.
It is feared that the death toll may rise further. The strong tremor was felt on the island of Kyushu at around 4:30 pm local time on Tuesday (July 28). Its epicenter was the city of Kumamoto. A large shopping mall in the city collapsed. There was also an explosion in part of the building.
Many are still trapped under the rubble. The chimney of a paper mill in the city collapsed. Fifty medical centers were damaged. The walls of a historic 17th-century palace also collapsed. About 40,000 homes in the city were left without electricity after the earthquake. More than 3,500 rescue workers are working on the rescue operation.
