Iranian officials attending Khamenei’s funeral will not be targeted: Trump
US President Donald Trump said that Iranian officials attending Khamenei’s funeral will not be targeted because people are needed for US-Iran talks. Iran International reported this information in a report on Sunday (July 5) citing US media outlet Axios. Meanwhile, talks between the US and Iran are scheduled to resume in Pakistan on July 11 after Khamenei’s final farewell ceremony.
Iranian state media reported that senior clerics will lead prayers at Ayatollah Khamenei’s funeral in Tehran, Qom and Mashhad instead of his son and current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. So far, neither Mojtaba Khamenei nor any of his brothers have attended any of the events. Mojtaba Khamenei’s father-in-law Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel was present as a representative of the Khamenei family.
Millions of people gathered at Tehran’s Grand Mosque on Saturday to pay their last respects to Ayatollah Khamenei. No world leaders attended last Friday’s funeral, but foreign guests attended.
