Iran rejects Oman’s proposal on the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has rejected Oman’s proposal to control navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has also offered to control a part of the Omani route through the strait. Al Jazeera reported this. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told state television that Oman had proposed that the Strait of Hormuz be divided equally between the two countries. However, Iran did not accept this proposal.
He said, “Oman proposed to us that a waterway be created in the Strait of Hormuz, 50 percent of which would be in our (Iran’s) territorial waters and 50 percent in Oman’s territorial waters. This waterway in the Strait of Hormuz could be such that ships would enter through our waters and exit through Oman’s territorial waters. He added, “Our proposal to Oman is that a part of the transit route through the Strait of Hormuz will be within our territorial waters, and the part of the route that passes through Omani waters will also be under our control.” He also said that if Oman does not accept this proposal, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed.
