Hamas’ New Political Chief Khalil al-Haya
The Palestinian Liberation Movement Hamas has announced the name of Khalil al-Haya as the new head of its political bureau. He replaces Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in October 2024.
Khalil al-Haya’s importance and influence within the organization have increased significantly since the assassinations of then-Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last year, Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, and military commander Mohammed Deif. He will now take over as head of Hamas’ political wing, which will fill the leadership vacuum and address the current wartime situation.
Born in the Gaza Strip in 1960, Khalil al-Haya has been closely associated with the organization since its founding in 1987. The leader, who has four decades of political experience, now has to take charge of the organization at a time when the entire Gaza Strip is experiencing intense conflict and a humanitarian crisis.
