Avalanche kills 5 in Italy
Five German climbers, including a 17-year-old girl, were killed in an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites on Saturday afternoon (October 1), the BBC reported, citing mountain rescue services.
A powerful avalanche on a mountain in the northeastern South Tyrol region near the Swiss border has killed two climbers. The Italian Alps rescue service said in a statement on Sunday (October 2) that three members of the first team were completely buried by the avalanche. All three died.
Two of the four members of the second team managed to find shelter and survive. The bodies of two more climbers – a father and his 17-year-old daughter – were recovered yesterday morning. The rescue operation has been delayed by adverse weather conditions.
