82 arrested in Shahjalal Airport area operation
Police have arrested 82 people in an operation to curb the nuisance of vagrants, beggars and drug addicts in the capital’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area.
The airport police conducted the operation simultaneously from 5 am yesterday (July 4) at various places including the airport roundabout, BRTA station, airport railway station, areas adjacent to the police box, airport entrance, VVIP and VIP roads. In this operation, 58 drug-addicted street children and 24 more people involved in various crimes were arrested. In all, a total of 82 people have been taken into police custody.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehdi said in a statement that vagrants, beggars or drug addicts will not be allowed to stay in the airport area under any circumstances. Regular police patrols have been strengthened for this purpose and the law and order situation in the area is currently normal. He said that necessary action has been taken through the ‘Child Affairs Police Officer’ as per the Children Act, 2013 regarding the detained children.
