58 killed in Shapla Chattar massacre identified

Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam said that the identities of 58 people killed in a mass gathering of Hefazat-e-Islam at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, the capital, on May 5, 2013, have been identified. He said this in response to a question from journalists at his office today, Sunday (July 19).
The Chief Prosecutor said that the investigative agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has been investigating this horrific massacre at Shapla Chattar for a long time. After completing the investigation, they have submitted a draft report to the Chief Prosecutor’s office.
He said that the report will now be sent for final review. So that a fair trial is ensured through a proper investigation report. So that the real accused face justice. I reviewed the draft report with the top leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam today. I hope to get the full report soon.
Who are the accused in this case? In response to a question from journalists, Aminul Islam said, “Reports have come with the names of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former police chief and BGB chief and many others. We are verifying them. After verification, the names of the accused may be added or removed from the list.” Regarding the victims of the Shapla Chattar massacre, the chief prosecutor further said, “We have received a list of 61 people killed so far. However, 58 of them have already been identified.” The press conference was attended by Hefazat-e-Islam’s senior Naib Amir Abdul Hamid, Maulana Mamunul Haque, Mufti Harun Izhar and Mufti Mir Idris.
