Benazir to be brought back to Bangladesh to face trial: State Minister for Foreign Affairs

The government is making strong efforts to bring back former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, accused of corruption and abuse of power, to the country and complete the trial through legal process, said State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid. She said Bangladesh is in touch with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government and is exchanging necessary documents to bring Benazir Ahmed back to Bangladesh.
The State Minister gave this information in response to a question about the progress of bringing back Benazir Ahmed while talking to reporters at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel on Sunday (August 2) afternoon. Shama Obaid said, “We are in continuous contact with the UAE government regarding former IGP Benazir Ahmed. The UAE authorities had asked us for some specific information and documents. The information they wanted has already been provided by the country’s Home and Foreign Ministries.”
Regarding the repatriation process, Shama Obaid said, “The UAE is taking necessary legal measures and steps in this regard as per its own laws. At the same time, our Ministry of Home Affairs is also in constant discussions with them. Information exchange and legal process are currently ongoing.”
Expressing optimism about the return of the accused former police chief to the country, the State Minister said, “We hope that it will be possible to bring the accused Benazir Ahmed back to Dhaka very soon after completing all legal and diplomatic processes. She will be brought back to the country and her trial will be completed through the prevailing legal process of this country.”
He further said that the final decision on what kind of effective steps can be taken in this regard will be taken after discussions with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the concerned departments.
