Tragic accident during Spain’s World Cup celebrations

Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0. The team’s unbridled joy after winning the World Cup for the second time turned to sadness in a moment. A 13-year-old boy was killed when a fountain partially collapsed in western Spain early on Monday.
The horrific accident occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo, a historic walled city of about 12,000 inhabitants in the province of Salamanca, bordering Portugal. Two others were injured in the incident, the country’s emergency services confirmed.
Hundreds of people had gathered around the Arbol Gordo fountain in the city center to celebrate Spain’s historic World Cup victory. Just then, the top of the monument collapsed and fell on people below, causing the casualties.
According to witnesses, the top of the fountain suddenly collapsed and fell on people below shortly after midnight. A 13-year-old boy died at the scene. Two others were injured and are being treated in hospital.
The city of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed its deep sorrow over the sudden and heartbreaking incident. In a statement, they said, “Today the entire city is in mourning for this untimely death. We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased… What was supposed to be a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has turned into a cruel tragedy.”
