State Minister says when local government elections will start
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Mir Shahe Alam has said that the five-tier local government elections may start from October-November. He said that the elections of Zilla Parishad, Upazila Parishad, City Corporation, Municipality and Union Parishad will be held in phases. However, the Bangladesh Election Commission will decide which election will be held first.
He said these things in response to questions from journalists at the Shibganj Upazila Parishad premises in Bogra on Friday (July 3). The State Minister said that the necessary allocation has been made for conducting the elections in the approved budget for the current fiscal year. The election schedule will be finalized based on the preparations of the Election Commission and discussions with the Ministry of Local Government and the Finance Department.
Earlier, he distributed various items among the beneficiaries under the ‘Integrated Livestock Development Project’ implemented for the socio-economic development and improvement of the living standards of the backward small communities living in the plains.
At this time, Mir Shahe Alam said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the country is moving forward on the path of development oriented towards public welfare. The government is working to include people from all walks of life in the mainstream of development. Various programs are being implemented to improve the living standards of the backward small communities by increasing their economic capacity and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.
Later, financial assistance was distributed to the helpless and distressed people from the State Minister’s discretionary fund. At this time, he said that standing by the helpless and disadvantaged people in building a humane state is one of the government’s commitments and such assistance programs will continue in the future.
Then, the State Minister inaugurated the construction of the official residence of the Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). At this time, he said that if modern and quality housing is ensured for government officials, administrative activities will be more dynamic and people-friendly. He also mentioned that in the continuation of the government’s development programs, importance is being given to building necessary infrastructure at the upazila level.
Shibganj and Mokamtala Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Ziaur Rahman, Upazila Engineer Sihadul Islam, Shibganj Police Station OC Shahinuzzaman Shahin, Upazila BNP Acting President Tajul Islam, General Secretary Advocate Abdul Wahab and others were present at the time.
