PM announces withdrawal of TIN requirement for opening bank accounts

To reduce the suffering and anxiety of the common people, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has proposed to withdraw the obligation to submit TIN for opening bank accounts and registering land titles. The Prime Minister made these remarks while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 in the National Assembly today, Monday (June 29).
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram presided over the session. He said, “There was a proposal in this year’s budget that TIN must be submitted for opening any bank account except for students. In addition, it was proposed to make a provision for submitting TIN for registration of allotment papers and registering property.”
Drawing the attention of the Finance Minister, the Prime Minister said, “This issue has created questions and confusion in the minds of the people. Our aim is to increase the tax coverage, but we do not want to harass the common people in any way. Therefore, I will request the Honorable Minister of Finance and Planning to withdraw this issue of submitting TIN for opening bank accounts and registering land titles.”
He added, “The government wants to restore public confidence not by increasing the tax burden, but by reducing harassment and expanding the tax base.”
