10 killed in Kolkata warehouse collapse

The death toll in the collapse of an under-construction warehouse building in the Taratala area of Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, has risen to 10. Meanwhile, the administration is continuing the rescue operation to ensure that no one is still trapped under the rubble.
The rescue operation was still going on almost 21 hours after the accident on Wednesday afternoon. Rescuers are searching for survivors under the rubble with the help of the army’s state-of-the-art underground search technology. A total of 30 people have been rescued from the rubble till Thursday morning. Some of them are said to be in critical condition. The deceased include Krishna Chowdhury, Rohit Chowdhury, Rahul Chowdhury, Chandrama Chowdhury, Pappu Razak, Azgar Hossain, Sahil Sardar and Ghee Kumar. A large number of rescue workers, fire brigade, police and medical teams have been deployed at the site.
A senior state government official said that all kinds of modern technology are being used to identify if anyone is trapped under the rubble. Efforts are being made to detect signals like human movement or heartbeats inside the rubble through special equipment of the army. The administration claimed that rescue workers are working day and night to rescue possible survivors. Ensuring quick treatment of the injured is equally important.
Local residents alleged that many workers were working in the building at the time of the accident. As a result, concerns arose from the beginning about the number of casualties. Worried family members were seen crowding the scene and hospital premises throughout the night to wait for their relatives.
An investigation has been launched to find out the cause of the collapse of the warehouse building. The administration said that it is investigating whether there was any defect in the construction work or whether safety rules were followed.
