Covered van hits parked truck, 2 dead

Two people were killed and eight others injured when a covered van hit a parked truck in Feni on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Five of the injured have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The accident occurred in the Dhaka-bound lane in front of Khaira Bhojanbari restaurant in Feni at around 2 am on Wednesday (June 10).
Police and locals said that when a gas-laden truck coming from Chittagong got a flat tire, it stopped on the Khaira highway, where the driver and helper were changing the tire. At that time, some locals gathered and helped the truck driver change the tire. Suddenly, a speeding covered van from behind lost control and crushed the gas-laden truck and the people standing there. One person was killed on the spot and nine were injured.
Upon receiving the information, the highway police and locals rescued the injured and took them to Feni General Hospital. One of the deceased, Jahangir (40), has been identified, but the identity of the other was not immediately known.
Feni General Hospital emergency department doctor Dr. Mosharraf Hossain Talukder said that one of the deceased died after being brought to the hospital and before the other was brought. Many of the injured have serious injuries to their hands, legs and heads. After emergency treatment, five people have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Two have been admitted to the hospital and one has been discharged after treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Fazilpur Highway Police Station Second Officer Md. Shahidul Islam said that after receiving information, the police quickly reached the spot and rescued the deceased and took them to the hospital. The truck and covered van involved in the accident have been seized. Further legal proceedings are underway in the incident.
