Child rape case verdict in 29 working days, youth sentenced to death

A court in Meherpur has sentenced a youth named Shakil Hossain (24) to death in a case of raping a nine-year-old child. The state’s lawyer claimed that the verdict in the case was announced in just 29 working days. Judge Md. Tajul Islam of the Meherpur Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict on Sunday (May 24) afternoon. The convict Shakil is the son of Abdal Haque of Chandpur village in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.
According to the details of the case, on June 16, in a village in Gangni upazila, accused Shakil Hossain threatened a nine-year-old child of the same village and took him to a jute field and raped him. In this incident, the child’s father filed a case with Gangni police station as the plaintiff. After investigating the case, the investigating officer submitted a report to the court. After taking testimony and hearing the case, the court sentenced accused Shakil Hossain to death as the charges were proven beyond doubt.
The state’s lawyer in the case was Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin, the public prosecutor of the Women and Children’s Repression Prevention Tribunal, and Maruf Ahmed Bijon, the accused’s lawyer. Mostafizur Rahman Tuhin said, “The verdict in the rape case has been announced in just 29 working days. We are satisfied with this verdict.” The accused’s lawyer, Maruf Ahmed Bijon, said, “We will appeal against this verdict in the High Court.”
