German Foreign Minister Calls on Iran to Open Strait of Hormuz

Amid the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, German Foreign Minister Johannes Waddeful has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and for the country to abandon its nuclear program. He said that Germany, as a close ally of the US, shares the same position – Iran must completely abandon its ‘nuclear’ weapons and prove its authenticity. At the same time, he demanded the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Waddeful posted on social media that they, like US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have the same demand – Iran must abandon its nuclear weapons and open the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the position of European allies on the Iran issue in the context of the war with Israel.
He has criticized several European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz commented on the Iran war, saying that Washington lacks strategic direction.
The German Chancellor said that he does not see a clear ‘exit strategy’ for the United States in the ongoing conflict with Iran. He made the comments while speaking to students in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Monday (April 27). Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported this information in a report.
In his speech to the students, he said, ‘The entire American nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership.’ According to a Reuters report, he also said that it is not clear how the United States, under Trump’s leadership, will emerge from this war in the current situation. The German Chancellor commented that Iran is playing a very strategic role in the negotiations and is in a stronger position than they think.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Johann Wedeful had called on Iran to engage in constructive talks with the US in Islamabad. “We know that the US vice president is ready to go to Islamabad. Now Iran should accept the US offer in the interest of its people,” Wadeful said in a statement on Tuesday (April 21).
He also said that it was crucial to find a solution through talks in the current situation. Earlier, in a statement against Iran following the joint US-Israeli attack, Johann Wedeful said that Germany would not participate in US and Israeli military operations against Iran and would not support any initiative for regime change in the country.
In the statement, he made clear Germany’s position that if we want to see a democratic future in Iran, that change must come from the Iranian people. He said that Germany is not taking part in this war and will not take part in the future. Similarly, we are not taking part in any specific steps to change the regime of any country, including Iran.
He believes that Germany is in contact with Iranian opposition parties and stands with them in opposing the government’s repression of the country’s people. However, he stressed that Germany cannot determine Iran’s political future. Earlier, on March 10, in response to a comment by President Trump, German Foreign Minister Johannes Waddeful said that Germany does not see any role for NATO in protecting the Strait of Hormuz.
