Woman dies in lightning strike in Chandina during Kalbaishakhi storm
A house in Chandina, Comilla, was severely damaged in the fierce Kalbaishakhi storm. Many trees and houses were uprooted. At least 10 houses collapsed across the upazila. Thousands of trees were uprooted and broken. A woman named Nazma Akhter (45) was killed in the lightning strike.
Nazma Akhter, who was killed in the lightning strike, is the wife of Amir Hossain of Purba Maijkhar village in Maijkhar union of the upazila. Maijkhar villager Abdul Baten said that Nazma Akhter died when lightning struck the ground while she was cutting paddy from the land and taking it home. The deceased Nazma Akhter is the mother of a son and three daughters.
The storm, which lasted for two hours from 10 am on Tuesday (April 28), destroyed fields, ghats, houses and cropland in the upazila. The darkness had almost extinguished the light of day before the storm began. A peaceful silence descended on nature. A few minutes later, as clouds roared in the sky, tree branches snapped in a gust of wind. Torrential rain began.
It is learned that a tree fell on the tin roof house of Narayan Das in Tulaoli Das’ house in Chandina Municipality and collapsed. A huge tree fell on the house of Solaiman Mia in Barkait village.
Kanu Das of Tulaoli village said that there was a big amra tree in front of the house. The tree fell on the house in a strong storm and merged with the ground. UNO of Chandina Upazila Mohammad Ashraful Haque said, Chandina Upazila has suffered extensive damage in the storm. We are preparing all the lists. We will take measures to provide government assistance by providing information to the families of those killed in the lightning strike.
