2 killed in truck accident in capital
Passengers rescued two people in critical condition and took them to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead around 2 am.
The passerby who brought them to the hospital, Md. Khairul Islam, said that around 1 am he was having tea at a shop near Mirhajirbagh Raw Market. Then he saw a truck coming from the opposite direction at a reckless speed. After about 30 seconds, the truck came in front and crushed a battery-powered rickshaw. They immediately ran and pulled the two out from under the truck and arrested the truck driver. The two were then taken to Dhaka Medical College, where they died.
He further said that after the arrest, when the truck driver was asked why he was driving at a reckless speed from the opposite direction, he replied that his truck had collided with another truck in the Jatrabari Dayaganj area. He was driving at a fast speed from the opposite direction to catch that truck. Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Raju confirmed the incident. He said the accident occurred when a truck hit a car in Mirhajirbagh at night. The bodies of the deceased auto-rickshaw driver and passenger have been sent to the morgue for autopsy. The identity of the rickshaw driver has been known. However, the identity of the passenger is not yet known. Efforts are underway to identify him. The truck was seized immediately after the incident and its driver was arrested.
