Nepal’s former PM Oli and Home Minister arrested

Nepal’s former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lakha have been arrested by the country’s police. They were arrested on charges of involvement in the deadly crackdown on Gen-G protesters in September last year.
The Guardian, Andolu Agency and several international media outlets reported this information. According to the report, KP Sharma Oli and Ramesh Lakha were arrested from their residence on the outskirts of the capital Kathmandu on Saturday morning (March 28).
“They were arrested this morning, the process will be carried out according to the law,” Kathmandu Valley police spokesman Om Adhikari told AFP. “No one is above the law. This is not revenge against anyone, but just the beginning of justice for the dead and injured.” Current Home Minister Sudan Gurung said on social media.
The report says that in 2025, a terrible student-youth uprising against corruption began in Nepal, which later turned into a movement to overthrow the government. At least 77 people were killed in police firing during that time.
In the face of violent protests by hardliners, 74-year-old Oli was forced to resign and his government fell. A government-formed inquiry commission report said that the then Prime Minister Oli and Home Minister Ramesh Lakhok took a tough stance in suppressing the protests.
The report alleged that they did not try to stop or control the firing, but rather their negligence led to the deaths of so many people. They have been recommended for imprisonment of up to 10 years for this crime.
In the first elections held after that movement, held on March 5, the ‘Rashtriya Swayamsevak Party’ led by Balendra Shah won an absolute majority. The massive arrests began just a day after Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician, was sworn in as Nepal’s new Prime Minister on Friday after winning the election.
