Fierce war of words over PM’s comment on wearing hijab, Owaisi-Himanta face off

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have engaged in a heated exchange of words over the dream of a hijab-wearing woman becoming the Prime Minister of India one day, India Today reported.
At an election rally in Maharashtra’s Solapur, Owaisi highlighted the inclusive nature of the Indian Constitution. He said that in the Pakistani constitution, only a person of a particular religion can become the Prime Minister. But there is no such restriction imposed in the Indian Constitution. According to Babasaheb Ambedkar’s constitution, any Indian citizen can become the Prime Minister, Chief Minister or Mayor. Owaisi said that his dream is that one day a hijab-wearing woman will become the Prime Minister of this country.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted to Owaisi’s statement. He said that according to the Constitution, there is no restriction on becoming the Prime Minister. However, India is a Hindu nation and a Hindu civilization. He claimed that the Prime Minister of India will always be a Hindu and they are confident about this.
Later, Owaisi strongly criticized Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement in front of reporters in Nagpur. He said that he has a ‘tubelight’ in his head. Where is such a thing written in the constitution, Owaisi questioned. He said that in the constitution of Pakistan, top posts are reserved for people of one community. But the constitution given by Ambedkar in India is the result of much wiser and educated thinking.
Owaisi also said that those who do not understand the constitution make such comments. This country is not only for one community. It is also a country of people who do not believe in God. He further commented that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s mentality is narrow-minded.
Meanwhile, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla strongly reacted to Owaisi’s statement. He challenged Owaisi to first appoint a hijab-wearing woman as the president of AIMIM. All these comments came amid the ongoing campaigning for the upcoming municipal elections in Mumbai. The election will be held on January 15 and the results will be announced on January 16.
