Truck falls into river after breaking bridge railing in Shailkupa
A truck driver and his assistant have died after breaking a bridge railing in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah. The accident occurred at around 1 am on Saturday (January 3) at the Barodah Old Bridge in Garaganj area of the Jhenaidah-Kushtia highway. The deceased have been identified as driver’s assistant Mobarak Hossain (20), son of Zafar Mia of Gazmanikunda village in Pabna Sadar upazila, and truck driver Sohel Sheikh (27), son of Abul Kalam Sheikh of the same village.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shailkupa Police Station Humayon Kabir confirmed this information on Sunday (January 4). Police and locals said that a truck loaded with pulses was heading towards Pabna from Jessore last night. When the truck reached the Barodah Old Bridge around 1 am, it lost control and fell into the Kumar River, breaking the railing.
Abdus Salam, Deputy Assistant Director of Jhenaidah Fire Service and Civil Defense, said that after receiving the information, three units of Shailkupa and Jhenaidah Fire Service started a rescue operation. The body of Mobarak Hossain was recovered in the morning and the body of Sohel Sheikh at 8 am. The truck involved in the accident was also lifted from the river.
Shailkupa Police Station OC Humayun Kabir said that after receiving the information about the incident, a rescue operation was started. The body of the truck helper Mobarak Hossain was recovered in the morning and the body of the driver in the morning and was sent to the morgue. Meanwhile, Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud visited the scene after receiving the information about the incident.
