Netanyahu’s close adviser resigns
There has been speculation for months that Ron Dermer could resign. Today, Wednesday (November 12), Israeli media confirmed that Ron, a close adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s Minister of Strategic Affairs, has submitted his resignation.
Ron was considered a confidant of Netanyahu. He was also highly controversial within Israel. A section of critics believe that Ron supported Israel’s attacks on Iran and Gaza. He was also accused of favoritism towards the Netanyahu government.
However, Ron did not give any specific reasons in his resignation letter. However, the Israeli minister said, “The current government will be defined by the conduct of the multi-pronged war that began before and after the October 7 attacks.”
Ron had been hinting at stepping down from his government post for months. He had promised his family a two-year term in power years ago, but he continued to work with Netanyahu during a “critical” time in Israel’s history.
Ron represented Israel in ceasefire talks with Hamas and played a key role in securing US support for joint air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He resigned after Hamas returned Israeli prisoners and their bodies.
The 54-year-old, one of Netanyahu’s closest aides, served as Israel’s ambassador to the US for a long time before joining the Israeli government. Netanyahu has yet to comment on his resignation.
