Two children drown in a pond while swimming in Gazipur

Two friends died while swimming in a pond in Gazipur’s Sreepur. The incident took place in a factory pond in Satiabari village of Rajabari union of the upazila on Saturday (August 9) afternoon. Later, the bodies of the two children were recovered by locals. The deceased were identified as Mahim (9), son of Rajab of the village, and Raihan (9), son of Shajahan of the same village. Both were students and friends of Rajendrapur Government Primary School. Relatives of the deceased said that Mahim, Raihan and Kawsa were close friends. They used to go to school together. They used to play in the field. They used to spend their days together. Since the school was closed on Saturday, the three children went out to play together. Mahim and Raihan did not return home even after Kawsa returned home in the afternoon. They were searched but could not be found. At one stage, the caretaker found their shoes and toys on the bank of the pond inside the factory boundary. When their relatives were informed, the bodies of the two children were recovered from the pond. Factory caretaker Hossain said that when the relatives were looking for the two children, he saw the shoes and toys of the two children lying on the pond bank and informed the relatives. Mahim’s uncle Shakil said that Mahim did not return home in the afternoon and went to look for him and found that his shoes were lying on the pond bank of the factory. And Raihan’s maternal uncle Kabir Hossain said that his nephew did not return home in the afternoon. After searching, he found his shoes lying on the pond bank and the bodies were recovered. Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barik said that two children drowned in the pond water while playing in Satiyabari village. Since there was no complaint from the relatives, it has been ordered to bury the bodies without an autopsy.
