Newborn’s body recovered from pond in Mongla

The police have recovered the body of an unidentified newborn from a pond in Mongla, Bagerhat. The incident took place at around 8:30 am on Sunday (July 20) in the pond of Maruf Billah’s house in the municipal area. Police have confirmed that the child is a boy. According to local sources, while going to bathe in the morning, a female tenant of the house saw a blue plastic bag tied to the pond’s ghat. She informed the owner of the house, Maruf Billah. When he came and opened the bag, he saw the body of a newborn inside. The police were immediately informed. On receiving the information, the Mongla police reached the spot and recovered the body of the child in the bag. At that time, the child had no clothes on his body. No marks or identification information were found next to the body. Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Anisur Rahman said, “The body of a newborn baby wrapped in a plastic bag has been recovered from the pond ghat. It is the body of a boy. An investigation is underway to find out who killed the newborn and dumped it here.” He added, “After examination, the body has been sent to the Bagerhat Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. The suspicion has been further intensified as the incident took place at Maruf Billah’s pond ghat. However, we are seriously investigating the matter as someone could frame him.”
